Service Aim
To assist people who have had polio to maximise their
independence and participation through the provision of
support and to facilitate access to appropriate services
and resources for the individual and their families.
Access
People who have had polio may access all aspects of
the service. Community service providers, PSV
Clients, and any other interested parties who are seeking
advice, information and education about PSV and polio may
also access Polio Services Victoria services.
Health Care Provider Referral
A medical referral is preferred but not essential.
Health care providers (eg. General Practitioners,
Physiotherapists, Podiatrists etc.) can refer people to
PSV.
PSV Service
Specialist services for people who have had polio were
traditionally provided by the Department of Human Services
and the predecessors of that department. A review of
polio services recommended a refocusing of the service to
provide specialist assessment, collaboration with
mainstream health providers to develop client service
plans and to provide an information and education service
to health providers, clients who have had polio and the
community.
The service was tendered in February 1998
with a detailed service specification designed to drive
the change in service focus. St. Vincent's Hospital
Melbourne was awarded the tender for Polio Services
Victoria on 23 March 1998.
